The first performance of Giacomo Puccini's Tosca took place at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome on 14 January 1900. The opera was inspired by Sarah Bernhardt, who played the role of Tosca in Victor Sardou's drama of the same name. Puccini first saw her in this role in 1889, then attended a production with this extraordinary actress again and got to know her. For many years he had dreamed of creating an opera on this subject and when he finally received the libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, he set to work. On 29 September 1899, the opera was completed.
It is logical that Tosca was first performed in Rome: the events of the opera take place in the eternal city and, moreover, are associated with several toponyms: the Basilica of S. Andrea della Valle, Palazzo Farnese and Castel Sant'Angelo on the banks of the Tiber. It is in these grandiose interiors that the love story of the opera diva Floria Tosca and her artist lover Mario Cavaradossi unfolds, caught up in a whirlwind of political intrigue. These characters, as well as the other protagonists, the Roman police chief Scarpia and the criminal Cesare Angelotti, are fictional. But the plot itself and its tragic epilogue have a historical background: it is about the fall of the Roman Republic established under Napoleon and the persecution of the republicans by the supporters of the Pope.
