The world premiere of Puccini's Manon Lescaut took place at the Teatro Regio in Turin on 1 February 1893. It was a triumph for the composer: according to contemporaries, the opera 'captivated the whole of Italy'. The London premiere a year later at the Covent Garden Theatre was no less significant. The opera was warmly received by George Bernard Shaw, famous not only for his plays, but also for his extremely curious and sometimes caustic musical criticism. This time he demonstrated a prophetic grace: 'Puccini seems to me more a possible successor to Verdi than any of his rivals.
